Kiro: log the usage Kiro reports on every wire, and forward combo child usage after commit - #7433
Preserve Kiro's upstream-reported token usage and provider credits in request logs for direct and combo routes. Reported usage no longer receives the local estimate floor or an estimated marker.
Bind each committed combo child's bridge usage to its own request context; failed or uncommitted children do not publish usage. Client-visible protocol output is unchanged.
Keep the contributor commits and the previous maintainer carry, refresh with an ordinary dev merge, and retain the focused parser, combo, end-to-end logging and estimate-cap regressions plus both layout maps.
Verification
Validated final head e188f963ce29d020f98e3dacf32d93f3d8c1d215 on Windows with Bun 1.4.4 and OCX_TEST_NO_QUEUE=1. Ordinary merge of origin/dev at b16bc0978b2eef1799f38042084809b5a0cd11bf; no rebase or force-push. The branch contains that dev tip (0 behind at validation).
bun test --no-env-file --isolate tests/providers/kiro/kiro-stream.test.ts tests/responses/responses-combo-bridge-usage.test.ts tests/server/server-kiro-usage-log-e2e.test.ts tests/usage/request-log-estimate-cap.test.ts tests/test-layout.test.ts tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts --timeout 60000: 193 pass / 0 fail.
bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scan, bun run --cwd docs-site build and git diff --check origin/dev...HEAD: exit 0. Frozen dependency installation completed before validation.
The Kiro-specific explicit layout shard and expected mappings are retained; scripts/test-layout/layout.json is 1,999 lines. Original contributor commits and prior carry 4686088 are preserved. No new runtime fix or new red-before-green claim was needed in this readiness refresh.
Full-suite exception: this shared Windows host has concurrent carry lanes. Per the owner's instruction, only the listed focused regression files ran, with one Bun test process at a time. bun run test and unrestricted test:changed were not run; broader coverage remains with PR CI.
This refresh adds no runtime behavior fix. Earlier red-to-green results remain historical evidence in the linked maintainer carry/review comments; this lane did not rerun a pre-fix baseline. No failed checks were rerun and no workflows were dispatched or approved.
NOT RUN: full local suite, live providers, native-client/platform acceptance. Current-head hosted CI must finish successfully before an owner-authorized merge.

Bug Fixes
Kiro usage logs now preserve token counts reported by the provider instead of replacing them with local estimates.
Usage and spend from combined Responses requests are recorded only when the child request commits, preventing failed or refused attempts from contributing usage.
When provider-reported token counts are unavailable, estimated usage remains available; separately metered credits continue to be recorded.
Documentation
Clarified how measured and estimated Kiro and Cursor usage is reported.
Problem 1. A combo child logs into its own context. The combo copies
that context into the request context once, when the child commits.
The bridge binds the adapter usage later, at the terminal frame, so the
request context never learned that usage came from the bridge. The
request log then re-read the bridged Responses wire. That wire has no
providerCredits, zero-fills the cache detail, and derives the input
count from the context checkpoint. The log row showed a high input
count, zero cache and no credits on /v1/messages, /v1/responses and
/v1/chat/completions alike.
Problem 2. Every Kiro row was marked estimated and raised to the local
input estimate, even when Kiro sent a tokenUsage block.
Fix 1. The combo passes each child onBridgeUsageBound. The transport
calls it when it binds bridge usage. After the child commits, the combo
sets usageFromBridge and usage on its own context.
Fix 2. The Kiro parser marks usage read from tokenUsage as
upstreamReported. A two-leg turn keeps the mark only when both legs have
it. usageForFinalLog and finalizedUsage skip the provider-wide estimated
mark and the input floor for marked usage. Usage without the mark, and
usage read off a wire, stays estimated.
The wire that the client receives is unchanged.
Tests: new tests/server/server-kiro-usage-log-e2e.test.ts replays one
Kiro stream (metering and tokenUsage, then no tokenUsage, then two legs
with tools) through /v1/responses, /v1/messages (stream and non-stream)
and /v1/chat/completions, on a direct route and on a combo route. A unit
test in request-log-estimate-cap.test.ts covers the mark. The Kiro
stream test now expects the mark. 15 of the 21 new cases fail without
the fix.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The combo forwarded bridge usage to the request context when the child
set childCommitted. The flag was set before callbackGate.commit(). If
the commit threw, a later usage binding of that child still reached the
request context.
The combo now keeps two flags for each target: childCommitted, set after
the commit, and childUsageBound, set by the callback. It forwards only
when both are true. A binding that comes before the commit waits for the
commit. A target that fails or never commits forwards nothing. The
callback takes no argument now, because the combo already holds the
child context.
Tests: new tests/responses/responses-combo-bridge-usage.test.ts drives
executeComboResponses with a fake dispatcher. It covers a binding after
the commit, a binding before the commit, a refused first target with a
committed second target, and a commit that throws. A new case in
request-log-estimate-cap.test.ts pins the aggregate rule: the
upstreamReported mark needs usage on every attempt, and an empty list or
attempts without usage give no mark.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The change distinguishes Kiro token counts read from upstream metadata from estimated usage, carries that status through merges and request logging, and forwards committed child bridge usage into combo request context. It adds tests and test-layout mappings for both paths.
Kiro token usage parsed from upstream metadata receives the upstreamReported marker. Merging retains the marker only when both legs carry it. Request logging skips the input estimate floor for marked usage and marks aggregate usage only when every record has the marker. Tests cover direct and combo routes, request formats, missing usage, and two-leg turns.
The transport signals when bridge usage is bound. Combo execution forwards that usage to the parent context only after the child commits. Tests cover binding before or after commit, fallback, and an aborted commit.

This PR and #7436 have the identical head 47e966b5bfff653378e79b538025a50a5993df9c, target dev, and identical changed-file lists/patches. Please retain one canonical review PR (the newer #7436 can carry this discussion) and close the other as duplicate, rather than validating/integrating both. The substantive usage review is recorded on #7436. No contribution has been discarded or merged by this comment.
Needs fixes before this can land: shard both new test registrations, retain expected-layout mappings, complete the required PR template/readiness evidence, and obtain successful executable CI.
Still needed on dev: yes. Kiro usage is still marked estimated (src/usage/log.ts:559), finalization applies the local estimate floor (src/server/request-log.ts:1628), and combo context is copied once before commitment (src/server/responses/core-combo.ts:1169).
Exact-head CI at triage time: 47e966b — policy checks and CodeRabbit pass; ci.yml run 39386193757 is FAILURE with zero jobs, without a named failing check. lane=all on exact head: n.a.
Please refresh onto current dev when addressing these; heads older than dev need a fresh exact-head CI run before review.
Resolve the expected-layout conflict by keeping dev's server-live entries and this branch's server-kiro-usage-log-e2e entry. Register this branch's two new tests in a layout-kiro-usage.json shard instead of layout.json, which would otherwise reach its 2,000-line limit.
Refreshed onto current dev and fixed the test registrations from the 2026-10-24 triage, as one ordinary merge commit 4686088a9 on top of your 47e966b5b (your commits unchanged):
Merged dev fdc6dd82d. The only conflict was tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json; it keeps dev's new server-live-close/server-live-cancel entries and this branch's server-kiro-usage-log-e2e.test.ts mapping.
scripts/test-layout/layout.json is back to dev's content, which is already at its 2,000-line limit. The two tests this branch adds are now registered in a new shard, scripts/test-layout/layout-kiro-usage.json (responses-combo-bridge-usage.test.ts → responses, server-kiro-usage-log-e2e.test.ts → server), listed in explicitShards on the existing line.
Local, Bun 1.4.4: bun run typecheck (2,227 files) and bun run structure:check pass; tests/test-layout.test.ts + tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts 29 pass / 0 fail; kiro-stream, responses-combo-bridge-usage, server-kiro-usage-log-e2e, request-log-estimate-cap and file-size-ratchet 164 pass / 0 fail. I approved the PR CI for this head after checking that the diff touches no workflow, dependency or release file.
Still needed from you: the PR template sections (Summary, Verification, Checklist) and the readiness attestations. #7436 has the same original head; once this lands it can be closed as a duplicate.

Merged dev b16bc0978b2eef1799f38042084809b5a0cd11bf with an ordinary merge; original author history and Co-authored-by credit are preserved. Focused verification: bun test --no-env-file --isolate tests/providers/kiro/kiro-stream.test.ts tests/responses/responses-combo-bridge-usage.test.ts tests/server/server-kiro-usage-log-e2e.test.ts tests/usage/request-log-estimate-cap.test.ts tests/test-layout.test.ts tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts --timeout 60000 — 193 pass / 0 fail. Typecheck, structure check, privacy scan, docs build and diff check: exit 0.
The Kiro-specific explicit layout shard and expected mappings are retained; scripts/test-layout/layout.json is 1,999 lines. Original contributor commits and prior carry 4686088 are preserved. No new runtime fix or new red-before-green claim was needed in this readiness refresh.
Review threads: 0 replied to and resolved with fixing-commit or source evidence. No new runtime behavior fix was needed, so this lane has no new red-to-green claim; the existing maintainer comments retain the prior regression evidence.
NOT RUN: full local suite (shared-host exception; focused files only), unrestricted test:changed, live providers, native clients and cross-platform acceptance. Hosted CI is checked once after publication and remains an owner gate; this lane cannot approve fork CI or merge. Spanish language/render acceptance, where applicable, remains separate.

Keep an uncommitted child’s usage out of the parent context.
If bridge usage binds before commit and callbackGate.commit() throws, Object.assign(logCtx, childLog, …) at Line 1252 has already copied childLog.usage into logCtx. The new childCommitted check at Lines 1078–1081 cannot prevent that copy. A failed commit can therefore leave the parent request log and spend settlement with usage from an uncommitted child. Commit before publishing the child context, or restore the parent context when commit fails. Extend the failed-commit test in tests/responses/responses-combo-bridge-usage.test.ts to bind usage before the callback throws.

Ensure `Object.assign(logCtx, childLog, …)` does not publish `childLog.usage`
until `callbackGate.commit()` succeeds; if commit fails, preserve or restore the
parent context so uncommitted usage cannot affect logging or spend settlement.
Extend the failed-commit test to bind usage before triggering the callback
failure and verify that usage is excluded.
